Quick answer: Root of Nightmares is the six-player Destiny 2 raid released with Lightfall on March 10, 2023. It has four encounters built around Light and Darkness node networks, ending with Nezarec, Final God of Pain. Clear calls and buff timing matter most. A Guardian Sherpa carry lets you play your own account while a guide explains each mechanic.

What is the Root of Nightmares raid?
Root of Nightmares launched on March 10, 2023 with the Lightfall expansion and supports a fireteam of up to six Guardians (Destinypedia, Shacknews). Its four encounters, Cataclysm, Scission, Macrocosm and Nezarec, share one idea: matching Light and Darkness buffs to the right nodes, enemies and shields.
At launch Contest Mode ran for 48 hours with a power cap, and a recommended power of 1770 was listed on Destinypedia. Current recommendations differ, so check the in-game Director. Typical clear length depends on team experience and we do not publish a fixed figure.

How do you manage a Root of Nightmares raid run?
These are team-practice steps we recommend for any six-player raid, not game rules.
- Before you queue: agree the six roles (caller, two mechanic runners, add control, boss damage, flex), who revives first and who holds Heavy ammo for bosses. Write them in party chat.
- Set up comms: everyone on voice chat, one caller per encounter, and a rule that only the caller talks during mechanics.
- Loadouts: bring a build you already know. Pack weapons for adds, bosses and long range, and check ammo types before each boss. Do not swap a build you have not practised just before a boss.
- Finisher plan: decide who takes final blows or special kills when an encounter needs one person to do it (for example, a Tormentor kill or a Gaze hand-off), and say it out loud.
- Checkpoints and progress: confirm in-game how your team's progress is saved this week before leaving the raid. Do not assume you can leave mid-encounter and rejoin where you left off.
- Pacing: take one encounter at a time. After each clear, loot, reload ammo, swap weapons and revisit the next encounter's roles before you move.
- Running callouts: the caller states the phase, the next trigger and each person's job. Players confirm with one word. Silence means 'got it'; ask if unsure.
- After a wipe: do not rush back. Spend 30 seconds naming what failed (timer, position, wrong shape or buff, dead runner), assign the fix to one person, and re-enter.
- When to pause: after three failed attempts with the same mistake, take a break, reset roles or switch the caller. Fatigue causes most repeated wipes.
- Leaving and rejoining: if someone must leave, finish the current encounter if you can and note which encounter you are on; confirm in-game that the rest of the team can wait or that a replacement can join.
Root of Nightmares encounter guide
Root of Nightmares has four encounters, plus travel sections between them. The steps below follow PCGamesN and GGRecon, with Shacknews and Destinypedia used to cross-check names and timers. Where the guides do not agree, we say "confirm in-game".
1. Cataclysm: Survive the Onslaught
Goal: Build a node network while killing enemies and keeping Sweeping Terror from reaching zero.
- Walk from the entrance along the outside of the ship, following the large statue in the distance, until you reach the prompt "Survive the Onslaught".
- Pick two orb activators and four add clearers.
- Stand in the glowing aura of the Traveler orb and shoot it to gain the Field of Light buff.
- The orb's light beam points to a spiral node on a different plate. Shoot the node with the buff; it becomes an orb that points to the next plate.
- Rotate: Player A shoots the orb while Player B stands outside the aura to give A the buff. A activates the first node. B then shoots the orb for their own buff and heads to the next node while A calls out the direction the orb pointed. A returns to the orb to rebuff just after B activates.
- Rules: a node shot without the buff does nothing, each node shot removes your buff, and if one player takes the buff while others already hold it the nodes are disrupted and must reset.
- The four add clearers kill enemies. Shielded Psions must be killed (PCGamesN says in melee) to spawn a Tormentor, and killing the Tormentor quickly extends the timer. Expect about four Tormentors; confirm in-game.
- Keep an eye on Sweeping Terror. If it reaches zero the team is wiped.
- When all nodes are done, follow the corridor to a platform with a black diamond. Shoot it to launch across the opening, shoot the next launcher diamond, and defeat the Aspirant of Nezarec at the end.
- Continue upward to the corridor where the prompt "Enter the Root" appears.
After a wipe: Re-pick the two orb activators and re-state who rotates first. Do not rebuff early: refreshing before the next node is lit disrupts the chain.
2. Scission: Enter the Root
Goal: Build node networks across a gap on three levels.
- Split into two teams of three. On each team, two players stay and clear adds and one is the runner who crosses the chasm.
- An Imminent Expulsion timer starts with each sequence (PCGamesN says two minutes to progress; Shacknews says it stops once both networks are done). Treat it as a wipe timer.
- One side shoots the orb for Field of Light and the other shoots the opposite orb for Flux of Darkness. These point to nodes that only players with the matching buff can activate.
- Runners shoot the black diamond to trigger a launcher and cross. Stand as far back as you can for a smooth launch; grapples and swords with Eager Edge can help.
- Runners follow the orb indicators, shoot, then return to the buff orb. Add clearers can return to the orb too, which refreshes everyone's buffs.
- Some enemies are shielded and only take damage while a matching buff is active. Barrier Colossuses appear at certain points.
- Clear Centurions to ascend. You pass three levels in total, using cannons to reach the next floor.
- At the end of the section, chain Field of Light and Darkness's Refuge buffs as a fireteam to create a refuge before Nezarec's shockwave. If this is botched the shockwave wipes the team. GGRecon and PCGamesN describe the buff order differently, so confirm the order in-game.
After a wipe: Restate runner and clearer roles on each team and who calls buff colors. The common error is shooting a node without the right buff.
3. Macrocosm: Zo'Aurc, Explicator of Planets
Goal: Sort the planets, then damage the boss on matching plates.
- Learn the layout: left, centre and right areas, four triangular platforms (two per side) and three planets above the centre.
- Assign one player per triangle and two players in the centre for adds (GGRecon's suggested split).
- Clear adds until four Centurions spawn. Killing them spawns four Terrestrial Lieutenants, one per triangle.
- Kill your Lieutenant to gain Planetary Insight, which shows planet auras on your side only.
- Number the planets and call out which one on your side is the wrong aura. Stand under it, take the Planetary Attunement buff, carry it to the other side and deposit it on that side's odd planet.
- More Lieutenants spawn. Kill them, and the message "The indexed planets reveal themselves" shows the three centre planets (usually two of one affinity and one of the other).
- Take buffs from side planets that match the mix and deliver each to the centre planet of the matching affinity.
- Shoot the floating shard in the middle to start boss damage.
- The boss shield alternates blue or orange. Gather on a plate matching the shield colour; each plate can be used once. After three plates he becomes immune; repeat the process.
- Get out of the way of the wall of flame when you see it charging.
After a wipe: Reassign the four triangle players and re-agree how to number the planets. The most common error is missing a planet, which also sends the fight back to the Centurion and Lieutenant phase if you shoot the shard early.
4. Nezarec, Final God of Pain
Goal: Chain Light and Darkness nodes, stun and damage Nezarec, and survive his wipe attacks.
- Assign two chain players (Light left, Dark right), some add clearers and the damage players.
- Nezarec starts at the back of the arena with a critical spot on each shoulder. Break both. When the second breaks, note whether the burst is Light or Dark.
- Shoot his chest weak spot to pull his attention onto the damage players, not onto the buff players.
- When he glows Light or Dark, gather and take the matching refuge using inactive orbs. PCGamesN: for a dark aura grab Field of Light and shoot an inactive dark node; for a light aura grab Flux of Darkness and bring it to an inactive light node. GGRecon describes the order slightly differently, so confirm in-game.
- The damage phase starts when both sides finish the chain. Players not chaining hit his crit spots on the shoulders and chest, which extends the timer.
- Stand on a pre-agreed plate where he has trouble hitting you, ideally near the map edge with wells and wards.
- Repeat the cycle of damage and refuge. The wipe timer is shorter after the first round.
- At the final stand, burn him down. Save Heavy ammo and a Super for this.
After a wipe: Restate the shoulder-colour to refuge-colour rule out loud and who stands on which plate. Building networks too slowly is the usual cause.

What roles and loadout work in Root of Nightmares?
A six-Guardian raid works best when every slot has a clear job before the first room. The chart below uses generic archetypes. No specific weapon or subclass is mandatory, and the best loadout is the one you already know how to play well.
Bring weapons for three jobs: adds, bosses and long-range threats, and keep Heavy ammo for damage windows. Make sure at least two Guardians are comfortable with node-building callouts and that everyone has a stun-capable weapon for Nezarec.
How do I prepare for Root of Nightmares?
- Update the game and check the recommended power level in the in-game Director.
- Bring weapons for different damage needs and a build you know well.
- Use a headset so you can hear callouts.
- Turn on two-factor sign-in for your account.
- Agree on roles and a caller before you start.
- Pick a time window when you can play without interruption.
What are the most common Root of Nightmares mistakes?
- Refreshing a buff too early and removing it.
- Shooting a planet shard after a miss.
- Ignoring a shoulder-color call before a Nezarec wipe.
- Skipping the pre-fight briefing and trying to learn mechanics mid-wipe.
- Spending Heavy ammo and Supers on adds instead of saving them for damage windows.
- Talking over each other, which hides the one callout that matters.
- Letting one player carry every mechanic, which makes a single death a team wipe.
What rewards does Root of Nightmares offer?
The raid's exotic is Conditional Finality (an Exotic Stasis/Solar Shotgun). Destinypedia also lists the Dream Demon Sparrow and the Gift of Cruelty jumpship as exotic rewards, and emblems and shaders for completion conditions such as Terrors Uprooted and Opaline Shatter. We did not confirm a seal name on the sources we checked, so we do not list one.

Drop tables, drop rates and rewards can change between seasons. Always confirm in game, and do not treat any drop as guaranteed on a given run.
How does a Root of Nightmares carry work?
A Guardian Sherpa carry is a guided self-play run. You stay signed in on your own account and play every encounter yourself, while an experienced Sherpa joins your fireteam, explains each mechanic and helps the team stay on track. We never ask for your password on self-play orders. See the Root of Nightmares raid carry for the options; it is listed from $45 for a full clear, and the flawless-goal option is $90.
- Pick the run type on the product page and check out.
- Open your private order page and confirm your platform, Bungie name and a time window.
- You can cancel for a full refund until a Sherpa accepts your order.
- A Sherpa accepts the order and sends a normal in-game fireteam invite at the agreed time.
- You play the raid together on your own account, with each encounter explained.
- After the run you have a 48-hour review window.

What is included, and what is not?
- Included: a guided, self-play run with an experienced Guardian, a private order page, encounter explanations and a 48-hour review window.
- Not included: account sharing or piloting (see our separate piloted listings if you want that), guaranteed drops, guaranteed completion times or any promise of in-game results.
What is a flawless run?
A flawless run is one finished without a death. We play toward that goal but cannot guarantee in-game results.
Is a carry safe for my account?
Self-play carries less risk than services that log in for you, but no provider can promise zero risk. Read our account safety page.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Root of Nightmares carry cost?
A Root of Nightmares self-play carry is $45 for a full clear and $90 for a flawless-goal run (no deaths) at Guardian Sherpa. Prices are shown before checkout, there are no hidden fees, and the WELCOME20 code takes 20% off a first order. See the Root of Nightmares carry page for the current price.
How long does a Root of Nightmares run take?
Time varies with the team, how many encounters are new to you and whether you choose the flawless goal. Your Sherpa gives an estimate on your order page before the run starts and explains each encounter as you go, which adds a little time but saves wipes.
What power level do I need for Root of Nightmares?
Check the recommended power shown in the in-game Director for Root of Nightmares and bring a character at or near it. Your Sherpa checks your character before the run and can suggest a quick power catch-up if you are under the recommendation.
Do I have to share my Destiny 2 login?
For self-play orders, no. You stay signed in on your own account and you stay signed in on your own account and join our fireteam through a normal in-game invite. On self-play orders we never ask for your password, your email login or your platform credentials. Piloted orders need secure account access, shared only after payment through your private order page. Read the account safety page for the full policy.
Can I cancel my order for a refund?
Yes, up to the moment a Sherpa accepts your order. Until then you can cancel from your order page for a full refund to the original payment method. After a Sherpa accepts, the customer-side cancel option closes, but our team can still cancel, refund or reschedule if something goes wrong. See the refund policy.
How do I book and what happens next?
Pick the run type on the product page and check out. You get a private order page where you confirm your platform, Bungie name and a time window. A Sherpa accepts the order, you receive a fireteam invite at the agreed time, and you play the activity together. Afterwards you have a 48-hour review window. The step-by-step guide covers each stage.
Is Root of Nightmares good for first-time raiders?
It has only four encounters, but each demands clear callouts about Light and Darkness buffs. A Sherpa can explain the node and planet mechanics before you reach each room, so a first run is more about learning roles than guessing. We cannot guarantee a clear, but guided teams usually avoid the common refresh and color mistakes.
