Duality Dungeon Guide for Destiny 2: Prep and Carry

Mirrored chambers lit gold and violet, Duality dungeon guide

Duality is the three-player Destiny 2 dungeon set inside Calus's mindscape. To prepare, check the recommended power level, bring a flexible loadout and use voice chat. A self-play carry lets you play your own account while a Sherpa explains each bell and Standard.

Quick answer: Duality is the three-player Destiny 2 dungeon released with Season of the Haunted on May 27, 2022. It has three boss encounters (Gahlran, the Vault Nightmares and Caiatl) linked by bell platforming. Success depends on shooting bells to swap realms and depositing Standards. A Guardian Sherpa carry lets you play your own account while a guide explains each mechanic.

What is the Duality dungeon?

Duality launched on May 27, 2022 with Season of the Haunted and supports a fireteam of up to three Guardians (Shacknews, Destiny Game Wiki). It is set inside the mindscape of the exiled Cabal Emperor Calus, reached on the Moon through the Derelict Leviathan. Its three encounters, Gahlran, the Vault Nightmares and Caiatl, share one idea: shoot Bells of Conquest to swap between reality and the nightmare, and carry Standards from one realm to the other.

GamesRadar says access needs the Witch Queen Digital Deluxe Edition or the Dungeon Pass, with the quest A Single Thread from Suraya Hawthorne; confirm what you own in-game. Guides list different launch-era power numbers, so check the recommended power in the in-game Director. Typical clear length depends on team experience and we do not publish a fixed figure.

How do you manage a Duality dungeon run?

These are team-practice steps we recommend for any three-player dungeon, not game rules.

  1. Before you queue: agree the three roles (bell guard and caller, two Standard runners), who revives first and who holds Heavy ammo for the bosses. Write them in party chat.
  2. Set up comms: everyone on voice chat, one caller per encounter, and a rule that only the caller talks during a bell swap.
  3. Loadouts: bring a build you already know. Pack weapons for adds, bosses and long-range Psion snipers, and check ammo types before each boss. Do not swap a build you have not practised just before a boss.
  4. Bell rule: before anyone shoots a bell to return to reality, the caller confirms all three Guardians are inside the safety circle. Say it out loud every time.
  5. Standard plan: decide which runner takes which symbol before you enter the nightmare, and say it out loud.
  6. Checkpoints and progress: confirm in-game how your team's progress is saved this week before leaving the dungeon. Do not assume you can leave mid-encounter and rejoin where you left off.
  7. Pacing: take one encounter at a time. After each clear, loot, reload ammo, swap weapons and revisit the next encounter's roles before you move.
  8. Running callouts: the caller states the phase, the next trigger and each person's job. Players confirm with one word. Silence means 'got it'; ask if unsure.
  9. After a wipe: do not rush back. Spend 30 seconds naming what failed (timer, a player outside the circle, wrong symbol, dead runner), assign the fix to one person, and re-enter.
  10. When to pause: after three failed attempts with the same mistake, take a break, reset roles or switch the caller. Leaving and rejoining: if someone must leave, finish the current encounter if you can and confirm in-game that the team can wait or that a replacement can join.

Duality encounter guide

Duality has three boss encounters, plus bell-based platforming and a statue puzzle between them. The steps below follow GGRecon, Shacknews and GamesRadar, with Prima Games and the Destiny Game Wiki used to cross-check names and loot. Where the guides do not agree, we say "confirm in-game".

Entry and the bell rules

Goal: Learn the realm-swap rule before the first boss.

  1. Listen to Eris at the start, then drop through the hole where the statue of Calus stands.
  2. Shoot the large Bell of Conquest visible through the window grate. Once it takes enough damage it sends the whole fireteam to the nightmare realm.
  3. To return to reality, every Guardian must stand inside the bell's safety circle and then shoot the bell. A Guardian who stands outside the circle dies.
  4. In reality you can shoot a bell from anywhere. In the nightmare you must be beside it.
  5. Work through the mindscape by shooting bells to switch realms and cross gaps. Guides describe shooting bells through bars, climbing to rafters and crossing the Calus-face rooms; the route is easier to learn with a guide in-game.
  6. Clear the Cabal in the room with the shallow pool, then drop through the floor door to the first boss.

After a wipe: Re-state the bell rule out loud: all three Guardians inside the circle before the bell is shot. Most early deaths come from one player standing a step outside it.

1. Nightmare of Gahlran, Sorrow Bearer

Goal: Collect Standards in the nightmare, deposit them in reality, clear the Visions of Gahlran, then use the damage window.

  1. Clear the Cabal in reality and kill the Bellkeepers if the bell is not active, then shoot the bell to enter the nightmare.
  2. Runner A and runner B each go to a side room and kill the Psion Standard Bearer. The Standard Essence drops at the room entrance. There are four Standards: Chalice, Sun, War Beast and Axes.
  3. The bell guard kills the Bellkeeper pair at the top bell and clears nearby enemies. GamesRadar calls this the safest bell because Gahlran and most Cabal cannot reach it.
  4. All three stand in the safety circle and shoot the bell to return to reality.
  5. Runners deposit their Standards on the matching plates. Each deposit opens a side room and spawns Colossus Cabal and War Beasts. Clear them.
  6. Each runner enters a side room while the guard shoots the bell to return everyone to the nightmare.
  7. In the nightmare, runners kill the Visions of Gahlran in their rooms (GamesRadar says six each; confirm in-game), then leave through the exit while the guard clears the Bellkeepers.
  8. When all Visions are dead Gahlran becomes vulnerable. Use Supers and Heavy weapons. A "Nightmare Collapsing" countdown of about 60 seconds wipes the team at zero.
  9. With seconds left, return to the bell and stand in the circle. Ring it to go back to reality and make Gahlran immune again. In reality there is no timer, so you can pick up Heavy ammo.
  10. Repeat until Gahlran falls. A chest appears in reality and a hatch opens to the next section.

The Standard deposit loop used in Duality: clear, enter, collect, return and deposit.

After a wipe: Re-assign which runner takes which side room and who guards the bell. The usual causes are missing the collapse countdown and leaving a runner outside the circle.

2. The statue puzzle and the first secret chest

Goal: Rotate four Cabal statues so they all face the bell platform.

  1. Enter the large crypt room. A bell sits on a central platform, surrounded by four statues facing different directions.
  2. Each statue has a Calus-face dial or button at its base. Pressing it rotates that statue 90 degrees counterclockwise. Sources disagree about which realm's button turns the real statue, so confirm in-game.
  3. Note which statues need how many turns, then switch realms with the bell until every statue points toward the platform. The floor opens to the vault.
  4. Secret chest 1 (GamesRadar): before you drop in, check the elevated platforms with doors. One door is slightly ajar and leads to a small room with a chest. Secret chests only give items you have already earned this run.

After a wipe: This room is safe to take slowly. Write down each statue's turns in chat before you press anything.

3. The Vault: three Nightmares

Goal: Defeat three Cabal Nightmares, each made vulnerable by two Standards.

  1. Two symbols glow on the Standard slots. The symbols are Chalice, War Beast, Axes and Sun.
  2. Kill the Bellkeeper pairs, then shoot a bell. One runner takes each matching symbol area in the nightmare; the third player guards the bell.
  3. Clear each area, including the Colossus at the far end. A Standard Bearer spawns with more enemies. Kill it and take the Standard.
  4. Return to reality through the safety circle and deposit both Standards on the matching slots. That Nightmare becomes vulnerable. Sources disagree on whether the nightmare has a timer in this room, so confirm in-game.
  5. Defeat the Nightmare. GamesRadar names the three as Ka'hok (Sworn of Umun'arath), Emonut (Sworn of Moli Imoli) and Uroa (Sworn of Shayotet); GGRecon does not name them, so treat the names as unconfirmed.
  6. Two new symbols appear for the next one. Repeat for each Nightmare, six Standards in total.
  7. If the nightmare is too busy, send both runners for one Standard, deposit it, then go back for the second.
  8. When the third Nightmare dies, the floor opens to your reward.

After a wipe: Re-read the two symbols, assign one runner per symbol and decide who guards the bell. Avoid standing in the central pit area when you enter the nightmare.

4. The Depths and the walk to Caiatl

Goal: Cross the bell platforming and reach the Dark Shrine.

  1. After the vault, continue into the large room that holds a black object under a white cloth.
  2. Secret chest 2 (GamesRadar): crouch into the crawlspace on the walkway nearest the entrance of that room.
  3. Shoot the bells you can reach through the bars, use platforms and the wall hole to climb, and cross the nightmare gaps bell by bell.
  4. Cross the large chasm by going right and following the wall to the red doorway. It leads to the Dark Shrine and the final boss.

5. Nightmare of Caiatl, Princess-Imperial

Goal: Deposit four Standards, then stun Caiatl at the right bells to open damage windows.

  1. Note the two symbols that appear on two of the four slots. The arena has three small bells and a giant Bell of Conquest at the far end. Kill a Bellkeeper pair to wake a bell.
  2. Runner A and runner B stand on the balconies matching the symbols. The guard shoots a bell to send everyone to the nightmare.
  3. Each runner kills the Psion Standard Bearer on their balcony and takes the Standard. The guard kills the Bellkeepers (six, per GamesRadar) and the runners help once they have their Standards.
  4. Return through the active bell and deposit both Standards. More enemies spawn.
  5. Repeat for the next two symbols. After four Standards are deposited the gem on the golden chains glows.
  6. Shoot the gem to ring the giant bell. Caiatl and the team enter the nightmare and the damage phase begins. Do not rush her yet; GamesRadar notes she has very high resistance before the stun.
  7. Kill the Bellkeepers, then watch which bell Caiatl runs toward. Reach it first and clear the Bellkeepers around it.
  8. Shoot that bell when she is a few feet away. This stuns her (Shacknews says for about 10 seconds) and gives the Waking Resonance damage buff when you stand near the bell.
  9. She then runs to another bell. Beat her to it and repeat. After the third bell the damage phase ends. If she reaches a bell first, the team returns to reality and the window is lost.
  10. Avoid explosive weapons near the bells; GGRecon warns they can trigger other bells early. Repeat the cycle until she dies. High burst damage matters.

After a wipe: Restate the bell order you saw, who guards which bell and who calls the shot. Timing is the whole fight: too early and she switches bells, too late and she rings one.

On Master difficulty, Shacknews reports Void-shielded Bellkeepers, Unstoppable Champions in the Gahlran side rooms and Barrier Champions in the Vault and Caiatl fights. Check the in-game modifiers before you start.

What roles and loadout work in Duality?

A three-Guardian dungeon works best when every slot has a clear job before the first bell. The chart below uses generic archetypes. No specific weapon or subclass is mandatory, and the best loadout is the one you already know how to play well.

Duality fireteam roles Three-slot fireteam role chart1Bell guardCalls bells and timers, clears Bellkeepers2Standard runner ATakes one symbol, kills its bearer3Standard runner BTakes the other symbol, backs up the guard

Bring weapons for three jobs: adds, bosses and long-range threats, and keep Heavy ammo for damage windows. A ranged option helps against the Psion snipers some guides mention in the nightmare, and burst damage or a Super helps during the Gahlran and Caiatl windows. Make sure at least one Guardian can clear a busy room quickly while the others carry Standards.

How do I prepare for Duality?

  • Update the game and check the recommended power level in the in-game Director.
  • Bring weapons for different damage needs and a build you know well.
  • Use a headset so you can hear callouts.
  • Turn on two-factor sign-in for your account.
  • Agree on roles and a caller before you start.
  • Pick a time window when you can play without interruption.

What are the most common Duality mistakes?

  • Shooting the bell to return before all three Guardians stand inside the safety circle.
  • Depositing a Standard on the wrong symbol, which wastes a whole nightmare trip.
  • Ignoring the Nightmare Collapsing countdown during the Gahlran damage phase.
  • Shooting the Caiatl bell too early or too late, which loses the stun window.
  • Using explosive weapons near the bells in the Caiatl fight.
  • Skipping the pre-fight briefing and trying to learn mechanics mid-wipe.
  • Spending Heavy ammo and Supers on adds instead of saving them for damage windows.
  • Talking over each other, which hides the one callout that matters.

What rewards does Duality offer?

The dungeon's exotic is Heartshadow, an Exotic Sword that drops from the final encounter (Prima Games, Destiny Game Wiki). The Mandate of Strength Exotic Ship is the reward for the Master Thoughtstealer triumph, which needs a Master difficulty clear. Weapons listed per encounter include Lingering Dread and The Epicurean (Gahlran), Stormchaser and Unforgiven (the Vault) and New Purpose and Fixed Odds (Caiatl), alongside Deep Explorer armor. Master difficulty offers Artifice versions of that armor. GamesRadar also mentions a seal and title, but we did not confirm its name on the sources we checked, so we do not list one.

How does a Duality carry work?

A Guardian Sherpa carry is a guided self-play run. You stay signed in on your own account and play every encounter yourself, while an experienced Sherpa joins your fireteam, explains each mechanic and helps the team stay on track. We never ask for your password on self-play orders. See the Duality dungeon carry for the options; it is listed from $25 for a full clear, and the flawless-goal option is $50.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Duality dungeon carry cost?

A Duality self-play carry is $25 for a full clear and $50 for a flawless-goal run (no deaths) at Guardian Sherpa. Prices are shown before checkout, there are no hidden fees, and the WELCOME20 code takes 20% off a first order. See the Duality carry page for the current price.

How long does a Duality run take?

Time varies with the team, how many encounters are new to you and whether you choose the flawless goal. Your Sherpa gives an estimate on your order page before the run starts and explains each encounter as you go, which adds a little time but saves wipes.

What power level do I need for Duality?

Check the recommended power shown in the in-game Director for Duality and bring a character at or near it. Your Sherpa checks your character before the run and can suggest a quick power catch-up if you are under the recommendation.

Do I have to share my Destiny 2 login?

For self-play orders, no. You stay signed in on your own account and you stay signed in on your own account and join our fireteam through a normal in-game invite. On self-play orders we never ask for your password, your email login or your platform credentials. Piloted orders need secure account access, shared only after payment through your private order page. Read the account safety page for the full policy.

Can I cancel my order for a refund?

Yes, up to the moment a Sherpa accepts your order. Until then you can cancel from your order page for a full refund to the original payment method. After a Sherpa accepts, the customer-side cancel option closes, but our team can still cancel, refund or reschedule if something goes wrong. See the refund policy.

How do I book and what happens next?

Pick the run type on the product page and check out. You get a private order page where you confirm your platform, Bungie name and a time window. A Sherpa accepts the order, you receive a fireteam invite at the agreed time, and you play the dungeon together. Afterwards you have a 48-hour review window. The step-by-step guide covers each stage.

Is Duality good for first-time dungeon players?

It has only three boss encounters, but every one depends on clean bell callouts, and standing outside the safety circle when returning to reality is fatal. A Sherpa can explain the bell, Standard and statue mechanics before you reach each room, so a first run is more about learning roles than guessing. We cannot guarantee a clear, but guided teams usually avoid the common circle and symbol mistakes.
