A Grandmaster Nightfall is the hardest difficulty of Destiny 2's three-player strike playlist, with Champions, shields and tight revives. To prepare, match your loadout to the modifiers, agree roles and use voice chat. A self-play carry lets you play your own account while a Sherpa guides the team.

Quick answer: Grandmaster Nightfalls are the top difficulty tier of Destiny 2's Nightfall strikes, with Champions, shielded enemies, Surges, Threats, Overcharged weapons and limited revives. Published reports say Grandmaster Nightfalls were removed in The Edge of Fate and that Grandmaster Vanguard Alerts followed in Renegades, so confirm this week's strike in the Director. A Guardian Sherpa carry lets you play your own account while a guide explains the modifiers.
What is a Grandmaster Nightfall?
A Grandmaster Nightfall is the highest difficulty tier of the Nightfall playlist, a three-player strike activity presided over by Zavala (Destinypedia). Destinypedia describes the ladder as Hero, Legend, Master and Grandmaster. Each tier adds modifiers, and Grandmaster adds limited revives and Extinguish, disables join in progress and has no matchmaking. The Champions, shields, Surges, Threat and Overcharged weapons below are the modifier families documented by Shacknews and Destinypedia for the Nightfall era.
Current status: Destinypedia and Dexerto report that Grandmaster Nightfalls were removed in The Edge of Fate and replaced by seasonal Conquests. Yardbarker and Blueberries report that Grandmaster Vanguard Alerts, a weekly rotating activity described as akin to Grandmaster Nightfalls, arrived with Renegades. Names, power requirements and rewards have changed between releases, so we do not publish per-week claims. Confirm this week's strike in the Director and the seasonal hub before you plan a run.
How do you manage a Grandmaster Nightfall run?
These are team-practice steps we recommend for any three-player high-difficulty strike, not game rules.
- Before you queue: agree the three jobs (caller, Champion control, boss damage), who revives first and who holds Heavy ammo for the boss. Write them in party chat.
- Read the modifiers together: open the activity card, list the Champion types, shield colours, Surges, Threat and Overcharged weapon, and say them out loud.
- Set up comms: all three on voice chat, one caller, and a rule that only the caller talks during Champion waves.
- Loadouts: bring a build you already know that matches the listed modifiers. Check that each Guardian has an answer for every Champion type listed.
- Shield plan: decide who handles Arc, Solar and Void shields and who uses a subclass that matches the active Surge.
- Checkpoints and progress: confirm in-game how your team's progress is saved before leaving. Do not assume you can leave mid-activity and rejoin; Destinypedia notes join in progress is disabled at this tier.
- Pacing: take one room or wave at a time. Clear the area, collect orbs of Power, reload ammo and revisit roles before you push.
- Running callouts: the caller states the phase, the next Champion and each person's job. Players confirm with one word.
- After a wipe: do not rush back. Spend 30 seconds naming what failed (a missed Champion, a Threat hit, a risky revive), assign the fix to one person, and retry.
- When to pause: after three failed attempts with the same mistake, take a break, swap roles or switch the caller. Fatigue causes most repeated wipes.
Grandmaster Nightfall difficulty guide: modifiers explained
A Grandmaster strike changes with the seasonal rotation, so this guide explains the modifier families rather than any single week. The figures below come from Shacknews (Season of the Wish era) and Destinypedia and may differ in the activity you open. Where we could not verify a detail for the current game, we say "confirm in-game".
Champions
- Champions are tougher enemies of three types: Barrier, Overload and Unstoppable (Shacknews).
- You must equip anti-Champion mods or weapons that can stun or break each type. Check the activity card and confirm which mods apply this season.
- Destinypedia notes that at Hero and above, defeating all Champions earns the Platinum rating and missing Champions lowers it, so ignoring them costs rewards.
- Assign one Guardian per Champion type when you can, and call the type out loud when it spawns.
Shields
- Shielded enemies carry Arc, Solar or Void shields and take reduced damage until the shield is broken with the matching element (Shacknews).
- Plan for damage in all three elements across the team so no shield colour is a surprise.
- Call shield colours as they appear, and let the Guardian with the matching damage clear them.
Overcharged weapons
- One weapon type (the Shacknews example is a sniper rifle or grenade launcher) receives a damage bonus. Seasonal artifact overcharges can add to this (Shacknews).
- Bring at least one Overcharged weapon type to your boss damage slot and keep ammo for it.
- Confirm the Overcharged weapon in the activity card each week.
Surges
- Surges increase your outgoing damage of one element. Shacknews lists a typical Grandmaster as having two Surges, chosen from Arc, Solar, Void, Stasis or Strand, at 25% bonus damage.
- Match your subclass and weapon elements to the active Surges where you can. Shacknews also notes Kinetic weapons deal more damage when your subclass element matches an active Surge.
Threat
- A Threat modifier increases incoming damage of one element. Shacknews lists the Threat as Arc, Solar or Void with a 25% increase.
- Use the matching resist mods and keep your health up. Ask your caller to flag when the Threat element is near.
Limited revives, Extinguish and other modifiers
- Grandmaster activities use limited fireteam revives, and defeating Champions can grant more (Shacknews, Destinypedia).
- Extinguish returns the fireteam to orbit if they fall in a Restricted Zone, so stay out of marked areas (Shacknews).
- Other modifiers named by Shacknews include Chaff (radar disabled), enemy modifiers and strike-specific modifiers. Confirm which apply.
- Join in progress is disabled and there is no matchmaking at this tier (Destinypedia), so arrive with a ready team.
Scoring, time and how a run flows
- Destinypedia describes scoring from kills, multi-kills, precision damage, Orbs of Power and revives. After the time limit, points stop accruing, begin dropping, and revive tokens are removed.
- Most strikes move through combat waves, a Champion-heavy mid-section and a boss. The exact layout depends on the strike, so look at the activity card and confirm this week's strike in the Director.
- Do not rush. A single missed Champion or a wasted revive costs more than a minute of caution.
- Save Heavy ammo and your Super for the boss.
After a wipe: Name the modifier that hurt you, repeat the Champion types and the shield order and re-assign roles before retrying.

What roles and loadout work in a Grandmaster Nightfall?
A three-Guardian strike works best when every slot has a clear job before the first wave. The chart below uses generic archetypes. No specific weapon or subclass is mandatory, and the best loadout is the one you already know how to play well.
Bring weapons for three jobs: adds, Champions and the boss, and keep Heavy ammo for the boss. Make sure every Guardian can handle every Champion type listed.
How do I prepare for a Grandmaster Nightfall?
- Update the game and check the activity's power requirement in the in-game Director.
- Read the modifiers, Champions and Overcharged weapon on the activity card.
- Bring weapons and mods that answer every Champion type, and a build you know well.
- Use a headset so you can hear callouts.
- Turn on two-factor sign-in for your account.
- Pick a time window when you can play without interruption.
What are the most common Grandmaster Nightfall mistakes?
- Missing a Champion type because nobody had the right mod equipped.
- Ignoring the Threat element and taking extra damage from the wrong attacks.
- Using a weapon element that does not match the shield or the Surge.
- Burning revives early and having none left for the boss.
- Spending Heavy ammo and Supers on adds instead of saving them for the boss.
- Skipping the pre-run briefing and learning the modifiers mid-wipe.
- Talking over each other, which hides the one callout that matters.
What rewards does a Grandmaster Nightfall offer?
Rewards depend on the release. Destinypedia lists Grandmaster Nightfall rewards from an earlier season as exotics, Ascendant Shards, Adept weapons that only dropped at this tier, and a Nightfall Memento. Blueberries reports that a Grandmaster Vanguard Alert in January 2026 offered a featured Tier 5 weapon, Enhanced Prisms and Ascendant Shards, with a masterworked weapon for a B grade or higher. These lists are examples from specific dates, so confirm the current rewards in-game.

Drop tables, drop rates and rewards can change between seasons. Always confirm in game, and do not treat any drop as guaranteed on a given run.
How does a Grandmaster Nightfall carry work?
A Guardian Sherpa carry is a guided self-play run. You stay signed in on your own account and play the activity yourself, while an experienced Sherpa joins your fireteam, explains the modifiers and helps the team stay on track. We never ask for your password on self-play orders. See the Grandmaster Nightfall carry for the options; it is listed at $29 for a single run, and the 3-run pack is $79. Your Sherpa confirms which strike you are running on your order page, so confirm this week's strike in the Director too.
- Pick the run type on the product page and check out.
- Open your private order page and confirm your platform, Bungie name and a time window.
- You can cancel for a full refund until a Sherpa accepts your order.
- A Sherpa accepts the order and sends a normal in-game fireteam invite at the agreed time.
- You play the activity together on your own account, with each modifier explained.
- After the run you have a 48-hour review window.
What is included, and what is not?
- Included: a guided, self-play run with an experienced Guardian, a private order page, modifier explanations and a 48-hour review window.
- Not included: account sharing (Guardian Sherpa only sells self-play), cheats or exploits, guaranteed drops, guaranteed completion times or any promise of in-game results.
Is the 3-run pack worth it?
The 3-run pack is $79 against $87 for three single runs at $29 each. It suits players who want to run more than one Grandmaster-level strike. Scheduling is confirmed on your order page, and we cannot guarantee drops or completion.
Is a carry safe for my account?
Self-play carries less risk than services that log in for you, but no provider can promise zero risk. Read our account safety page.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Grandmaster Nightfall carry cost?
A Grandmaster Nightfall self-play carry is $29 for a single run and $79 for a 3-run pack at Guardian Sherpa. Prices are shown before checkout, there are no hidden fees, and the WELCOME20 code takes 20% off a first order. See the Grandmaster Nightfall carry page for the current price.
Are Grandmaster Nightfalls still in Destiny 2?
Published reports say Grandmaster Nightfalls were removed in The Edge of Fate and replaced by Conquests, and that Grandmaster Vanguard Alerts arrived with Renegades as a weekly rotating, similar activity. Names and rules change between releases, so confirm this week's strike in the Director and the seasonal hub, and ask your Sherpa which activity your order covers.
What modifiers does a Grandmaster Nightfall have?
Documented modifier families are Champions (Barrier, Overload, Unstoppable), Arc, Solar and Void shields, an Overcharged weapon type, two Surges that boost your outgoing damage, one Threat that raises incoming damage and limited revives. Exact values change by season, so read the activity card before you start.
What power level do I need for a Grandmaster Nightfall?
Check the power requirement shown in the in-game Director for the activity and bring a character at or near it. Requirements have changed between seasons, so we do not quote a figure. Your Sherpa checks your character before the run and can suggest a quick power catch-up if you are under the recommendation.
Do I have to share my Destiny 2 login?
For self-play orders, no. You stay signed in on your own account and you stay signed in on your own account and join our fireteam through a normal in-game invite. On self-play orders we never ask for your password, your email login or your platform credentials. Piloted orders need secure account access, shared only after payment through your private order page. Read the account safety page for the full policy.
Can I cancel my order for a refund?
Yes, up to the moment a Sherpa accepts your order. Until then you can cancel from your order page for a full refund to the original payment method. After a Sherpa accepts, the customer-side cancel option closes, but our team can still cancel, refund or reschedule if something goes wrong. See the refund policy.
How do I book and what happens next?
Pick the run type on the product page and check out. You get a private order page where you confirm your platform, Bungie name and a time window. A Sherpa accepts the order, you receive a fireteam invite at the agreed time, and you play the activity together. Afterwards you have a 48-hour review window. The step-by-step guide covers each stage.
